The British Columbia Waterfowl
Society wishes to convey a warm welcome and thanks for people
interested in or already serving as volunteers at the George
C Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary. Volunteers are essential
to the smooth running of the site and the achievement of our
goals.
Our
Society was established in 1961 and manages the Sanctuary,
supports the conservation and management of British Columbia’s
waterfowl, and promotes public appreciation of the environment
through interpretation, education and research. More precisely,
our long-term objectives are to: manage the Sanctuary as
a community asset, and a vital refuge, staging and wintering
habitat; use revenues to benefit the Sanctuary and adjacent
areas; foster public appreciation for migratory waterfowl;
maintain good community relations particularly with Westham
Island landowners; and maintain our principal role of licensee
and operator of the Sanctuary.
If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, please contact
the Sanctuary office for basic information about the Sanctuary,
the Society, and the kinds of volunteer assistance we seek.
We hope to identify and foster rewarding volunteer work experiences
for all those interested in helping the Society achieve its
goals.
The activities are just some of the areas in which we can
use volunteer assistance:
Helping with special events (registration, photos of event
activities, site preparation, parking and traffic control)
Work parties for trail and facility maintenance, gardening
etc.
Trailside interpreters (pointing
out birds along trails, and hosting visitors in the museum)
Helping with newsletters, translation project, archives,
website materials etc on behalf of BCWS.
