Sanctuary Bird Checklist:
 

Over 280 species of birds have been recorded at the Sanctuary. Most are included on the checklist published by the British Columbia Wildlife Viewing Program. However, numerous uncommon species have been noted in the past few years, and the list now numbers 289 species.

Birdwatching Contacts in the Vancouver Area
Bird Alert: The Vancouver Natural History Society sponsors a Rare Bird Alert Hotline at 604-737-3074. BCVanBirds is a noticeboard through Yahoo Groups for for birders and photographers in the Vancouver area. Check this for up to date sightings.

Counts

The Sanctuary falls within the Ladner Christmas count area. Adjacent count areas are Vancouver, White Rock and Victoria. To see the results of North American Audubon Christmas count records, go to Cornell University's Birdsource Web site and the eBird program.

If you are interested in participating in a count in the Vancouver area, contact the local natural history clubs.

Local Natural History Societies

The Vancouver Natural History Society has an active Birding Section, with regular meetings and birdwatching trips to many natural areas around Vancouver. Visit the Federation of BC Naturalists (BC Nature) for additional clubs in the region.

The Wild Bird Trust also manages a Sanctuary in North Vancouver and other properties in the MetroVancouver area.

Tides are important when birdwatching along the intertidal foreshore. Viewing is best on incoming tides.

Bird Studies Canada has many projects on the go. You can help collect data through their diverse survey programs.

Wild Birds Unlimited has stores in the region featuring birdwatching equipment, feeders and nestboxes, bird seed, and sometimes opportunities to join local birdwatching trips.

Important Bird Areas of Canada (IBA) has a collective list of the major birding areas and their significance to Canadian bird populations

Similarly, many birders can contribute to the collective knowledge of their favourite birding spots by contributing their checklists to the eBird program.
